Washington DC - Basement Finishing

This full basement renovation in Washington DC transformed an unfinished lower level into a highly functional living space while preserving the home’s classic‑historic character. The project began with comprehensive waterproofing along the entire perimeter, ensuring long‑term durability and moisture protection — a critical step for DC basements.

To create a legal bedroom, the team installed an egress‑compliant window well, paired with a new bathroom to complete the suite. The renovation also introduced a custom laundry room featuring built‑in cabinetry, a beverage fridge, and upgraded finishes that elevate the space beyond typical utility rooms.

One of the standout features is the climate‑controlled wine cellar, designed to maintain precise temperature and humidity levels — a premium amenity that adds both function and sophistication.

The biggest challenge was the limited ceiling height, which required rerouting mechanical ducts while still maintaining proper proportions for the classic moldings and trim. Achieving this balance demanded careful coordination and thoughtful detailing.

UNIK Creative Studio handled the permitting process, ensuring compliance with DC code requirements for egress, mechanical systems, and structural modifications.

The result is a dramatic transformation: what was once an underutilized basement is now a fully finished, elegant extension of the home, complete with modern amenities and historic charm.
