McLean - Two-Story Rear Addition
This modern‑contemporary two‑story addition in McLean transformed an open rear yard into a fully conditioned architectural extension of the home. The first level serves as a flexible multi‑use space, while the upper level features a modern living suite complete with a kitchenette, dining area, sitting lounge, and a striking mid‑century ErgoFocus floating fireplace.
The entire perimeter is wrapped in retractable glass panels, paired with a 170” motorized projection screen, integrated ceiling‑mounted sound system, thermally modified wood ceilings, electric heaters by Bromic, and smart switches and outlets for a seamless, technology‑driven experience. Large‑format tile flooring, a custom floating single‑beam staircase, and custom metal railings with a wood cap matching the ceiling boards complete the interior architecture.
Structurally, the project required a full steel frame to support the all‑glass envelope. This created extremely tight tolerances for floor‑level alignment with the existing home and demanded precise coordination of steel and glass shop drawings — leaving zero room for error.
UNIK Creative Studio led the architectural design, structural coordination, renderings, animations, and full permitting process, ensuring every detail aligned between the steel fabricator, glass manufacturer, and installation teams.
What began as a simple deck with an optional screened porch evolved into a high‑end, modern addition that connects the home to its surrounding forest landscape. The result is a space that flows effortlessly between interior and exterior, perfect for hosting events and enjoying nature year‑round.
