This modern‑contemporary deck structure in Washington DC was built over an existing detached brick garage, creating a highly functional outdoor entertainment space in a rowhouse where yard area is limited. The new deck features free‑standing planters for privacy, space for outdoor furniture, a gas fire pit, and a grilling area — turning an underutilized rooftop into a valuable amenity for the homeowner.

Because of the large span between the garage walls, the deck required a custom steel structure to support the load safely and cleanly. This introduced several engineering and fabrication challenges, including the need for custom support brackets, custom flashing, and precise integration with the existing parapet walls.

One of the most complex elements was the custom steel spiral staircase, designed not only for access but also as a visual feature. The staircase required careful coordination to ensure the horizontal handrail pickets aligned seamlessly with the upper deck railings — a detail that demanded exact fabrication and installation.
