3rd St NE - Kitchen Renovation
This kitchen renovation in a Washington DC corner rowhouse completely transformed a dark, outdated main level into a bright, open, and highly functional space. The project included full demolition, updated plumbing and electrical to meet modern codes, and a redesigned layout that maximizes flow and natural light.
The most impactful upgrade was replacing the original 30” rear door with a 9‑foot multi‑panel bifold patio door, dramatically increasing daylight and creating a seamless connection between the kitchen and the rear yard. This new opening allowed the entire main level to feel larger, brighter, and more inviting — perfect for the homeowners, who frequently host gatherings.
The design blends craftsman character with contemporary elements, featuring shaker‑style cabinetry, new appliances, and a layout optimized around the expanded rear façade.
Working in a century‑old brick rowhouse presented challenges, especially when modifying the entire rear wall to accommodate the oversized opening. Leveling, structural adjustments, and precise coordination were essential to ensure a clean, safe, and code‑compliant installation.
UNIK Creative Studio led the architectural design, permitting, and full layout development, ensuring the new kitchen aligned with both the structural constraints of the rowhouse and the homeowners’ vision.
The result is a dramatic before‑and‑after transformation — from a dark, enclosed kitchen to a bright, contemporary space that connects the open floor plan to the outdoors and supports the clients’ lifestyle of hosting friends and family.
